Snowboarding at Phoenix Park, South Korea 2007

The following is a repost from a blog that originally appeared on Myspace on February 5th, 2007.

So we had been talking about going snowboarding for a while, but between people going on Christmas leave and going to the field, it kept getting put off.  Well, we finally arranged a trip, with many thanks to Lash and his Korean girlfriend Jenny, who was able to get us deals and make reservations for us (even if she did make 2 reservations at 2 seperate places, oops!  Don't worry, we love you Jenny!)

At some point before going, we were having a couple beers and buying some snowboard clothing when we were wandering back home through the ville and passed a wig store.  The details are a little fuzzy to me (and probably everyone else that was there) but it made sense that we would all buy wigs to wear snowboarding!  This was clearly logical at the time and of course, after we all bought them, we had to wear them around the ville and go to a neighboring bar where we could pose as professional snowboarders from Canada.  Ussery definitely had one drunk guy convinced, and even after finally showing the guy that it was a wig, I don't think he believed we were anything *other* than foreign snowboarders....

Here's a few pictures from the now infamous wig shopping night...

A few of the 1/38 Medics cancelled on us at the last minute to go to a new Hooters that opened up in Seoul, Korea so we picked up some of the HHB medics to tag along with us.
Little Rome, or, as he's pictured here, "FROme"

The sad thing is, they will keep making ugly wigs like this as long as there are drunk people like us to buy them!

Schenck, looking like a chick but convinced that it's his "old hairstyle"

From left to right it's Romero, Young and Cates

Lash, Cates and I

Here's Ussery and Young in the bar afterwards, they look like ROCKSTARS!!

Even Grizzly Adams appreciates some Chicken-on-a-stick after a hard night of drinking

Well, the big day finally came and we loaded onto our private bus and headed off on the 3 hour trip.  3 hours is a long time when you're drinking the whole way and to speak for myself, I'm lucky I was able to snowboard at all!

Since I haven't pinned on Captain rank yet, we decided to demote Captain Morgan to Lieutenant Morgan....

Ricky and Jenny!  Thanks for putting the trip together!

 Schenck and little Rome

 Cute couple!  Bai and Rome....

The bus ride went by pretty quickly considering we basically just partied the whole way down there.

From left to right, Sarah (Private Kryzalski's wife who happened to be visiting), Private Delangre, Specialist "Grizz" Young and SPC Boggs, another one of the HHB medics who thankfully came along to help absorb the cost of those bastards that skipped out on us at the last minute!!

Boggs and Cates on the bus.  Cates brough 6 hats, I have no idea why, but he ended up giving this one away to a little Korean boy on the slopes.  The kids dad came over and thanked him, saying how nice that was.  See, not all Americans are assholes!

The Romero brothers, Private Romero and Staff Sergeant Romero.

 The entrance to Phoenix Park

This man is feeling right at home in the mountains.  Just look at that hair!

Matt Schenck, still looking way too pretty, but refusing to believe us...

Remember this face, you'll be seeing it at the next winter olympics!

Boggs "aka Swamps" at the top of the hill, probably the only time she was on her feet.

 I love the mohawk hat!

A couple group photos of some admiring fans, they must have seen us on TV during some snowboarding competition or something

A final shot of the crew from that night of snow"wig"boarding.

The view from the lodge

Kimchi pots where they ferment the cabbage used to make kimchi....I love the fence made from skis!

The rum was abused all night long and the drinking continued into the morning hours by a few dedicated troops.....

Pope Lash, from the lodge pulpit

Here's where we stayed, there were 2 large rooms upstairs and then we ate in the little "florida room" downstairs.....you can see Rick Lash and Jenny making up on the top floor.  Apparently, drinking for like 20 hours in a row isn't socially acceptable.  Must be some strange Korean cultural limitation or a woman thing...  JUST KIDDING Malisa!  I love you!!!!!!

Breakfast, Korean style.  Cuts of pork, some eggs and some spicy bean/pepper paste.  Yum!!  Oh, and who could forget rice?!

Private Cates, struggling in his battle against the Captain.  Although he tried all night, he couldn't finish the bottle  A valiant effort though.  He finally yielded at around 2 in the afternoon.....

All said it was a good weekend.  Believe it or not, nobody vomitted or had too much of a hangover!  There were a few hangups, as can be expected, but with SSG Romero and myself playing "Dad" and making sure nobody got too retarded  we got along pretty well for a group with so many different personalities.

And for those of you who have never snowboarded, be prepared to hurt your ass pretty seriously.....  Can't wait for my next trip!  Beautiful beaches with my baby in Hawaii, oh........and Mai Tais!!!
Here's a couple videos of us buying the wigs and snowboarding.  Enjoy!
